Shalako (1968)

Shalako is the kind of old-school widescreen Western that knows exactly how to use its canvas: New Mexico vistas stretched to the horizon, danger riding in from every edge of the frame, and action staged with a clean, classical clarity that modern films often forget. Sean Connery brings a flinty, weary authority to the title role, the perfect counterweight to a British hunting party whose refinement looks awfully fragile once the frontier stops playing polite, while Brigitte Bardot adds a spark of glamour that doesn’t feel imported so much as tested by the elements. Ted Moore’s colorful photography and Robert Farnon’s sweeping score do a lot of the heavy lifting, giving the movie a rugged, romantic pulse even when the story turns hard-edged. It’s not for viewers seeking a nuanced, contemporary take on Apache representation, and it does contain some intense material, but if you want a handsome, muscular adventure Western with real movie-star presence and a terrific sense of scale, this one delivers.

Shalako is clearly aiming for an old-school adventure Western: a rugged guide shepherding pampered European aristocrats through danger, with big names and sweeping desert peril. The problem is it rarely generates real tension, and the much-hyped Connery–Bardot pairing lands with surprisingly little heat, leaving the drama feeling flat when it should crackle. It also plays pretty dated today in its attitudes and storytelling, so if you’re hoping for a sharp, character-driven Western, this can feel disposable. Still, if you want a straightforward survival trek with scenic locations, a few solid action beats, and Connery doing stoic competence, it can pass an undemanding evening—just don’t expect a classic.
