The Mercenary (1968)

The Mercenary is the kind of spaghetti western that feels like it’s having a blast even as it keeps a sharp eye on what violence and revolution do to people. Sergio Corbucci stages the action with swagger and bite, letting humor and brutality sit side by side, while Ennio Morricone’s score practically struts through the film, turning shootouts and standoffs into something close to opera. What really hooks you, though, are the characters: a coolly cynical hired gun, an idealist being shaped and tested, and a revolutionary firebrand who won’t let the story settle for easy heroics. If you’re looking for a clean, classical John Wayne moral universe this isn’t it—but if you want an entertaining, hard-edged western with wit, momentum, and style to spare, it’s a terrific ride.

The Mercenary is clearly aiming for a witty, politically charged “Zapata” western, mixing revolution talk with swaggering anti-hero showmanship and a bit of satire. When it clicks, it’s fun: the leads have charisma, the set pieces have flair, and it’s more playful than grim. But the story can feel oddly stitched together, with pacing that lurches and motivations that shift just because the next beat needs to happen, so if you want a clean, tightly driven narrative you may end up irritated. Also, if you’re coming for the hard-edged brutality and relentless tension of tougher spaghetti westerns, this one’s comparatively lighter and may leave you feeling underfed.
