Head is trying to blow up The Monkees’ bubblegum TV image and replace it with a psychedelic, anti-establishment collage about fame, control, and media manipulation, and you can respect the ambition even when it doesn’t land. The problem is it’s less a “movie” than a string of chaotic sketches and meta-jokes that can feel smug, dated, and deliberately confusing, especially if you’re expecting a straightforward comedy or a concert-style musical. If you don’t enjoy free-form surrealism, abrupt tonal shifts, or satire that prioritizes attitude over coherence, this will likely feel frustrating rather than clever. That said, if you’re in the mood for a time-capsule of late-’60s counterculture with a few inventive set pieces and the band game enough to mock their own myth, it can be an interesting mess.
