Two for the Road (1967)

If you want a straightforward romance, the constant tonal shifts—from breezy comedy to sour marital drama—can feel restless and a bit trendy, and the stop-start structure may come off as uneven rather than insightful. It also lingers in repetitive bickering and emotional stalemates that can turn the middle stretch stodgy or even tedious, especially if you don’t enjoy watching a relationship curdle in real time. Still, Audrey Hepburn’s warmth and the film’s bittersweet atmosphere do offer real charm, so it’s best for viewers who like messy, adult relationship stories more than sweeping romance.
