Son of Godzilla (1967)

Son of Godzilla is the rare kaiju entry that feels genuinely warm-hearted without skimping on the creature-feature thrills, turning the usual city-stomping spectacle into a playful, surprisingly tender riff on parenthood. Jun Fukuda keeps the adventure brisk and colorful, mixing jungle-island sci-fi, punchy humor, and impressively tactile suitmation effects into a vibe that’s more Saturday-matinee wonder than doom-and-gloom catastrophe. The father-and-son dynamic between Godzilla and the newly hatched Minilla gives the mayhem a charming emotional hook, even as giant mantises and a nightmare spider ensure there’s still plenty of monster peril to savor. If you prefer your Godzilla stern and destructive you may find this lighter tone a departure, but if you’re on the fence, this is one of the series’ most purely enjoyable, good-natured crowd-pleasers.

Son of Godzilla is clearly trying to pivot the franchise into a lighter, kid-friendly adventure, swapping dread and destruction for a “monster dad learns parenting” vibe on a tropical island. If you come for the intimidating Godzilla of earlier films, this one can feel like a tonal betrayal: the comedy is broad, the human subplot is serviceable at best, and Minilla is the kind of cute-or-grating character that will either charm you or ruin the whole experience. The action has a few fun creature-feature beats (giant mantises, a giant spider, and some surprisingly rough scuffles), but the overall mood is more Saturday-matinee than sci-fi menace. Watch it if you’re in the mood for campy, family-leaning kaiju silliness; skip it if you want Godzilla to be scary, serious, or even remotely cool.
