Hour of the Gun (1967)

John Sturges stages the action with crisp, confident craft, but the real pull is the mood between the shots: a tense, morally shadowed pursuit where duty and vengeance start to blur at the edges. James Garner brings a steady, quietly wounded authority to Earp, while Jason Robards’ Doc Holliday is all dry wit and hard-earned melancholy, making their partnership feel like a reluctant bond forged under pressure. It’s not the most crowd-pleasing, swaggering shoot-’em-up—this one is more psychological and somber—but if you want a smart, absorbing take on a familiar myth, it’s a ride worth taking.

Hour of the Gun is clearly trying to strip the Wyatt Earp legend of its swagger and treat the aftermath of the O.K. Corral like a grim, procedural manhunt rather than a crowd-pleasing shoot-’em-up. That seriousness can feel heavy and a bit obvious, with deliberate pacing that plays more like a somber reckoning than an exciting Western adventure. If you want a charismatic, larger-than-life Earp and a brisk, rousing rhythm, James Garner’s quieter, more matter-of-fact take (and the film’s overall mood) may leave you cold. Still, if you’re in the mood for a downbeat, more “what it cost them” version of the story, Jason Robards brings bite as Doc Holliday and Sturges stages the violence with clean, unsentimental clarity.
