The Plague of the Zombies (1966)

The Plague of the Zombies is Hammer horror at its most handsomely haunted: a foggy Cornish nightmare rendered in muted color, elegant sets, and a slow-building dread that seeps into your bones. John Gilling treats the material with real craft, letting atmosphere and striking imagery do the heavy lifting as suspicion, superstition, and colonial-era voodoo bleed into a proper Victorian mystery. It’s less about jump scares than the pleasure of being immersed in a world of candlelit corridors, graveyard unease, and the unsettling idea of the dead returning for work they never agreed to. If you want fast, modern zombie mayhem, this may feel measured—but if you’re on the fence and crave classic, tasteful chills with superb presentation, it’s an easy recommendation.

The Plague of the Zombies is clearly aiming for classic Hammer-style gothic horror: foggy Cornwall, respectable gentlemen investigating evil, and a dab of voodoo to spice up the “undead” angle. The problem is the storytelling is pretty by-the-numbers, so if you need surprises, sharp character work, or a script with real bite, this can feel like it’s going through familiar motions. And despite the creepy makeup and a few memorable shocks, it’s tame by modern standards—more atmosphere than intensity—so gorehounds and adrenaline seekers may be left shrugging. If you’re in the mood for old-school mood, period trappings, and a steady (not scary-fast) burn, it’s a solid, watchable relic; just don’t expect it to reinvent zombies.
