Beware of the Car! (1966)

Beware of the Car! is one of those rare crime comedies that feels mischievous and deeply humane at the same time, turning a car thief into a kind of moral prankster and letting you enjoy the caper while quietly asking what “justice” really looks like. Eldar Ryazanov keeps the tone light on its feet—witty, satirical, and warmly affectionate toward ordinary decency—while staging a cat-and-mouse pursuit that’s as funny as it is oddly touching. Innokentiy Smoktunovskiy makes Yuri Detochkin an unforgettable contradiction: timid and principled, guilty and impossible to dislike, especially as the net tightens around him through his own best friend on the police force. If you like comedies with a conscience and a distinctly Soviet flavor of irony, it’s a delight; if you need your crime stories hard-edged or your heroes squeaky clean, this one may feel too gentle, but that gentleness is exactly its charm.

Beware of the Car! is clearly aiming for a warm, satirical “Robin Hood” caper that pokes at hypocrisy and corruption, and it does have a gentle charm when it leans into that moral comedy. But if you’re expecting a tight crime plot or laugh-out-loud pacing, this can feel shaggy and talky, with humor that’s more wry Soviet stage-play than snappy heist thrills. The tonal mix—light farce, earnest morality, and the Hamlet subplot—won’t work for everyone, and some viewers will find it quaint rather than sharp.
