Lewis Gilbert’s direction lets the sharp dialogue and breezy ’60s vibe glide along until the laughter catches in your throat, and the story’s romantic misadventures start to carry real moral weight. It’s not for everyone—sexual themes are front and center, and one sequence involving an abortion is deliberately upsetting—but if you want a comedy-drama that entertains while it interrogates the cost of living only for yourself, Alfie still lands with a sting.

The problem is that what once read as provocative can now feel dated and casually misogynistic, with women too often treated like lessons for Alfie rather than fully realized people. The film’s tone also lurches between breezy comedy and heavy drama, and some of the big symbolic beats land a bit clumsily instead of cutting deep. If you’re up for a time-capsule of 1960s sexual politics with a standout lead performance (and can handle an intense abortion subplot), it’s still worth a look; if you want a romantic drama that feels emotionally modern and even-handed, this probably isn’t it.
