The Skull (1965)

The Skull is a deliciously nasty little slice of British horror that turns a simple object into a full-blown nightmare, and it does it with such pictorial elegance you can feel Freddie Francis composing dread in every shadow. Peter Cushing brings a refined, intelligent vulnerability to Dr. Maitland, while Christopher Lee’s presence lends the whole affair an aristocratic chill, as if the film itself is haunted by good taste. It’s less about jump scares than about atmosphere—lavish art direction, a hypnotic score, and hallucinatory visuals that make London and its drawing rooms feel like trapdoors to something unspeakable. If you want fast-paced gore, this isn’t your ride, but if you’re tempted by classy, unnerving horror that crawls under the skin and stays there, this one is absolutely worth your time.

The Skull is clearly trying to be a classy, psychological horror piece—more creeping dread and cursed-object paranoia than outright shocks—and it’s got the perfect casting for it, with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee lending real gravitas. The problem is that the film leans hard on a few visual tricks (especially relentless roaming camera moves and “skull POV” shots), and what starts as stylish can turn repetitive and a bit self-satisfied. The pacing also sags, so if you need tight plotting, clear rules for the supernatural, or escalating set-pieces, you may find yourself checking the time. Still, if you enjoy vintage British horror as mood and atmosphere first, and you’re happy to watch great actors carry a thin script, it can be a pleasantly eerie curio rather than a full meal.
