Morituri (1965)

Morituri is the kind of war thriller that doesn’t just build suspense—it tightens it like a noose, trapping you on a steel corridor of a ship where every glance can give you away and every moral choice has a cost. Bernhard Wicki turns a pulp-ready premise into something weightier: a pressure-cooker sea adventure with the uneasy feeling that survival and decency might be mutually exclusive. Marlon Brando plays the reluctant impostor with raw, jittery conviction, while Yul Brynner’s captain radiates command and menace, making their chess match feel personal, physical, and inevitable. It’s not a rah-rah World War II picture and it does brush up against grim human cruelty, but if you want a smart, tense film that treats wartime heroics as complicated business, this one rewards the ride.

Morituri is clearly aiming for a tense, morally thorny wartime infiltration thriller, with Bernhard Wicki trying to make the ship feel like a floating pressure cooker where nobody stays clean. The problem is the suspense often gets smothered by cluttered plotting and a heavy, sometimes turgid melodrama that can make the long stretches feel more dutiful than gripping. If you’re expecting a lean action-thriller with crisp twists and momentum, this may test your patience, even with Brando and Brynner doing serious, watchable work. That said, if you can tolerate a slow burn and you’re more interested in grim anti-war mood, moral compromise, and strong performances than tidy structure, it still has bite.
