Help! (1965)

Help! is what happens when Beatlemania gets poured into a spy-movie blender and set to “delightfully unhinged”: Richard Lester keeps the camera nimble, the jokes quick, and the whole thing moving with the giddy confidence of a band that knows exactly how charming it is. The premise is gloriously silly—a cursed ring, a cult on the hunt, mad scientists and assorted would-be captors—and the film treats it all like a pop-art chase dream, where every close call is an excuse for another burst of comic invention. It’s also a musical pleasure, not in the polished, plot-stopping way, but in the breezy way the songs and the Beatles’ natural chemistry become the movie’s heartbeat. Help! is clearly trying to bottle the Beatles’ lightning again, swapping the quasi-documentary charm of A Hard Day’s Night for a louder, sillier adventure that plays like a pop-art comic strip brought to life. The problem is it leans hard on a nonstop chase-and-gag loop, and once you’ve got the joke, the film keeps repeating it until the second half starts to feel a bit winded and scattered. If you want a tight story, character-focused comedy, or the band at their most naturally funny, this can come off fragmented and oddly dull for something so frantic. Still, Lester’s visual style has flair, the music and Beatles charisma do the heavy lifting, and if you’re in the mood for colorful mid-60s nonsense rather than a coherent plot, it can be an easy, breezy time.
