Darling (1965)

Julie Christie gives a star-making performance that’s magnetic and unsettling in equal measure, making Diana’s hunger for attention feel less like a plot device than a pulse the whole film can’t stop chasing. John Schlesinger directs with verve and snap, letting the parties, studios, and jet-set escapes play like a romantic fever dream that gradually reveals itself as sharp satire about fame, desire, and the stories we sell about ourselves. If you need characters to grow, consequences to land, or the movie to dig beneath the surface it’s mocking, you may find it shallow and oddly detached.
