Carry On Cowboy (1965)

Gerald Thomas keeps the pace brisk and the tone buoyant, letting the jokes land through knowing dialogue and broad, lovable performances, especially as a prim “marshal” whose greatest weapon is his earnest competence in entirely the wrong profession. It’s a send-up that understands the genre well enough to spoof it without ever feeling mean, building to the kind of comic inevitability you can see coming and still enjoy. If you don’t click with innuendo-heavy, old-school British farce, it may feel dated—but if you do, this is one of the Carry On entries that really earns its reputation.

Carry On Cowboy wants to spoof the American Western with the series’ usual chaos: mistaken identity, saloon swagger, and a “hero” whose main skill is sanitation rather than shooting. If you’re not already on board with Carry On’s relentless puns and broad, winking double entendres, this one will feel like a parade of gags in search of a plot, with subtlety left tied to a hitching post outside. Even for fans, it’s often seen as a middling entry where the laughs depend heavily on whether you find the wordplay charming or simply exhausting. Still, the cast commits, the pace rarely drags, and if you like your Westerns turned into a noisy music-hall farce, it delivers exactly that.
