Carry On Cleo (1964)

Carry On Cleo is what happens when ancient history wanders into a British music hall and decides to stay for the laughs: a cheeky, fast-moving spoof that treats Rome and Egypt like playgrounds for puns, double entendres, and perfectly timed silliness. The joy is in the ensemble’s comic relay race—Sidney James’ blustery Mark Antony, Kenneth Williams’ deliciously fussy Julius Caesar, and Kenneth Connor’s accident-prone “hero” all keep the jokes bouncing, while Amanda Barrie’s Cleopatra brings a surprisingly confident, star-making sparkle. Gerald Thomas keeps the pace brisk and the gags coming, so even the “epic” moments feel like they’re winking at you from behind the curtain. If you don’t click with broad, schoolboy-style innuendo, you may find it relentlessly daft—but if you do, it’s one of the Carry On films that earns its reputation as a crowd-pleaser.

Carry On Cleo is clearly aiming for a cheeky, fast-paced Roman romp that parodies history with nonstop gags, innuendo, and broad performances from the series regulars. The problem is it can feel like it’s trying so hard to be funny every single minute that the jokes blur together, leaving you with plenty of noise but surprisingly few laughs that actually stick. If you don’t enjoy knowingly silly, slightly smutty British humour and a deliberately flimsy plot that exists mainly to shuttle the cast from one setup to the next, this will likely feel tiring rather than entertaining. On the plus side, the main trio bring committed energy and there are a few playful set pieces, so it can still work as light comfort viewing if you’re already a Carry On fan and your expectations are set to “amiable nonsense,” not comedy gold.
