The Haunted Palace (1963)

The Haunted Palace is clearly aiming for lush, gothic atmosphere with a Lovecraft-tinged curse-and-possession story, and Roger Corman knows how to dress a set to look like a nightmare. The problem is it often plays like a familiar remix of the Corman/Price formula, with slack storytelling that drifts instead of tightening the screws, and an ending that can feel more like a shrug than a payoff. Vincent Price does strong dual-duty and Lon Chaney Jr. adds welcome heaviness, but the film’s biggest pleasures are mood and performance rather than a sharply satisfying narrative.
