Taras Bulba (1962)

Taras Bulba is the kind of old-school epic that knows how to fill a wide screen: thundering cavalry charges, smoky sieges, and a sense of history written in mud, steel, and wind across the steppes. J. Lee Thompson stages the action with real heft, and Yul Brynner gives the story a granite center—part warrior, part father, all conviction—while Tony Curtis brings a surprisingly tender restlessness to the film’s romantic pull. The vibe is sweeping and earnest, more grand adventure than modern realism, with the drama rising naturally out of loyalty, pride, and impossible choices rather than clever twists. If you’re allergic to big, declarative 1960s epics, it may feel old-fashioned, but if you want spectacle with a beating heart, this one still rides.

Taras Bulba is clearly aiming for a sweeping, old-school historical epic: big battles, bigger speeches, and a tragic romance meant to pit duty against desire. When it works, Yul Brynner gives the film real weight and authority, and the scale and pageantry can still scratch that “classic adventure” itch. The problem is the tone and performances don’t always match—Tony Curtis can feel miscast and modern, which undercuts the seriousness and turns key emotional beats a bit flat. If you want a consistently gripping war drama or nuanced history, this may feel like a handsome but middling horse-and-sword spectacle; if you’re in the mood for a vintage epic with uneven acting and broad strokes, you’ll likely have a better time.
