Parrish (1961)

Parrish is the kind of glossy, big-hearted Hollywood melodrama that knows exactly how to sweep you up: sunlit tobacco fields, simmering rivalries, and a young man forced to grow up fast under the shadow of a domineering stepfather. Delmer Daves gives the Connecticut River Valley real texture and “local color,” so the romance and resentment feel rooted in a place you can practically smell, while Troy Donahue’s earnest charm keeps the emotional stakes front and center. Claudette Colbert and Karl Malden add grown-up weight to the family storm, turning business competition into something personal, bruising, and occasionally thrilling. If you’re allergic to old-school schmaltz, it may feel indulgent, but if you want a handsome, dramatic escape with genuine momentum, Parrish delivers.

Parrish is clearly aiming for a glossy, old-school melodrama about ambition, class, and messy romance set against the surprisingly cutthroat world of Connecticut tobacco farming. The problem is that it often plays like a very long soap opera: characters can feel more like poses than people, the dialogue is stiff, and the plot keeps circling the same emotional beats until the pacing starts to drag.
