Circus of Horrors (1960)
A plastic surgeon and his nurse join a bizarre circus to escape from the police. Here he befriends deformed women and transforms them for his "Temple of Beauty". However, when they threaten to leave, they meet with mysterious accidents.
What people think about Circus of Horrors
Circus of Horrors is the kind of lurid, elegantly nasty little thriller that only a 1960s British production could deliver: part crime film, part Grand Guignol nightmare, all wrapped in the garish lights and sawdust glamour of a traveling circus. Sidney Hayers turns the big top into a pressure cooker of showmanship and dread, where every act feels like it could tip from spectacle into catastrophe, and Anton Diffring anchors it all with a chillingly magnetic performance—suave, controlled, and quietly monstrous. The movie’s pleasures are tactile and immediate: sinister backstage corridors, a “Temple of Beauty” that’s equal parts promise and threat, and set pieces that don’t shy away from sharp, pulpy shocks. It won’t be for viewers who prefer their horror subtle or their thrills bloodless, but if you want a stylish, mean-spirited blend of noir cynicism and carnival terror, this one earns its title.
Circus of Horrors wants to be a lurid, back-alley blend of crime thriller and Grand Guignol carnival horror, with a slick surgeon using a traveling circus as his private hunting ground. The problem is the story lurches from incident to incident with logic that’s more convenient than convincing, so if you need tight plotting or believable character choices, you’ll spend a lot of time rolling your eyes. What it does have is a grimy, colorful circus atmosphere, a few memorably nasty set-pieces, and Anton Diffring leaning hard into cold, controlled menace. Worth a look if you enjoy vintage, slightly sleazy “horror of the strange” vibes and don’t mind the script being the weakest act in the tent.
