Austerlitz (1960)

What makes The Battle of Austerlitz special is its old-school, big-canvas ambition: Abel Gance stages Napoleon not as a tidy textbook hero, but as a towering public spectacle, surrounded by ceremony, ego, and the machinery of power. The film has the stately, pageant-like sweep of classic European historical epics, and even when the drama is doing the heavy lifting, you can feel it building toward the thunder of war with a sense of inevitability. Part of the pleasure is simply watching an almost absurdly stacked cast inhabit this world—faces like Claudia Cardinale, Orson Welles, and Vittorio De Sica give the film a prestige glow that keeps the political rooms as interesting as the battlefield. It’s not for viewers who want a brisk, modern war movie, but if you’re on the fence and crave grandeur, star power, and a director reaching for legend, this is absolutely worth the march.

Abel Gance is clearly aiming for a grand, respectful portrait of Napoleon, splitting the film between court politics and the famous battle, and you can feel the intent to make history look important. The problem is it often plays like a dutiful pageant: lots of talky maneuvering, stiff staging, and a pace that can make a long runtime feel even longer. When the combat finally arrives, it has moments of scale and period detail, but the filmmaking rarely sparks with the urgency or imagination you’d hope for from the director’s reputation.
