The Apartment (1960)

What makes The Apartment special is how Billy Wilder turns a sly, laugh-out-loud premise into something unexpectedly human: a romantic comedy with a bruised heart and a razor-sharp view of how easily people trade decency for advancement. Jack Lemmon makes C.C. Baxter both hilarious and quietly aching, while Shirley MacLaine brings a luminous mix of wit and vulnerability that keeps the film from ever feeling like a mere satire. It’s not for everyone if you want a purely light romance, since it brushes up against adultery, drinking, and a dark turn, but if you like comedies that earn their warmth without denying the world’s cynicism, this is a must.

Billy Wilder is clearly aiming for a sophisticated, bittersweet rom-com that skewers corporate sleaze while still giving its lonely characters a shot at dignity. But if adultery played for laughs (and used as the engine of the plot) makes you uncomfortable, this will feel morally queasy rather than charming, and the story’s “cute” setup can read like a dirty fairy tale depending on your tolerance. It also takes a sharp turn into darker territory with heavy drinking and a suicide attempt, so don’t expect a breezy, purely romantic classic. That said, the performances are terrific and the film’s wit is real—just know it’s a cynical, adult comedy-drama, not a warm hug.
