Green Mansions is clearly aiming for a dreamy, tragic jungle romance with a fable-like “nature vs. civilization” message, and you can feel the studio trying to make it lush and important. The problem is Mel Ferrer’s direction often lands as slow and self-serious, so what should feel mystical can come off ponderous and oddly distant.
