The Young Lions (1958)

What makes The Young Lions special is its rare willingness to look at World War II as a human weather system—how it reshapes ordinary lives on all sides—without turning anyone into a cardboard symbol. Edward Dmytryk directs with big-screen confidence and a steady moral gaze, giving the story real scope while keeping it intimate, and the adaptation moves like a novel you can’t put down. Marlon Brando brings uneasy complexity to a German soldier caught between ambition and disillusionment, while Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin make the American threads feel lived-in, tender, and bruisingly believable. It’s not a nonstop action picture and it carries the measured pace of its era, but if you want a war drama with stature, feeling, and performances that linger, this one earns your time.

The Young Lions is clearly aiming for a big, earnest WWII character study, cross-cutting between a German soldier’s disillusionment and two American draftees’ coming-of-age under pressure. The problem is it often plays like a prestige “important film” that can’t quite find a clean shape—more a string of episodes than a gripping arc—so the emotional hits don’t always land. Brando is the main draw, but his accent can pull you out of scenes, and the other performances and themes can feel oddly muted for material this heavy. If you want tight war action or a sharply focused moral drama, this may feel long and a bit hollow, but if you’re patient with old-school epics and want a thoughtful, non-graphic WWII snapshot with occasional flashes of power, it’s still worth a look.
