The Blob (1958)

The Blob is special because it turns a delightfully simple idea into pure, escalating suspense, the kind of lean 1950s creature feature that knows exactly how to work an audience. Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. gives the film a bright, all-American small-town sheen that makes the creeping dread pop, and watching Steve McQueen’s scrappy teen hero try to convince skeptical adults adds a surprisingly satisfying layer of urgency. The effects are of their era, sure, but the pacing, the set-piece thrills, and the “it could happen here” vibe make it far more entertaining than its gelatinous premise suggests.
