When a Woman Meddles (1957)
French film favorite Edwige Feuillere plays a high-class gangster's moll named Maine. When Maine's first husband and daughter pay a visit, it's an awkward time for our heroine and her current amour, gang boss Godot (Jean Servais). In addition to fielding a lot of embarrassing questions, Godot also has to deal with a pesky turf war with a rival mobster. Not that the ex-husband is a paragon of virtue: he's busy trying to get even with a crooked business associate.
What people think about When a Woman Meddles
When a Woman Meddles has that irresistible, smoke-laced French noir flavor where every glance carries a secret and every room feels like it’s listening. Edwige Feuillère commands the film with a poised, intelligent performance as a woman navigating loyalty, love, and reputation in a world run by men who think they own the rules, while Jean Servais brings weary authority to the gangster at her side. The drama tightens with the pressure of old ties resurfacing and new dangers circling, and the movie’s polish and atmosphere make it easy to sink into even when the story takes familiar crime-melodrama turns. It’s not the most relentlessly paced thriller, but if you come for sharp acting, a classy mid-century underworld mood, and the early spark of Alain Delon and Bruno Cremer, it’s a rewarding watch.
When a Woman Meddles wants to be a slick French crime drama with noir bite and a little playful irony, built around a classy “kept woman” caught between past baggage and present danger. The problem is the story keeps knotting itself into complications that feel more busy than gripping, and the tonal juggling (noir one minute, near-comedy the next) doesn’t land cleanly. Yves Allégret’s direction feels oddly muted for material that should crackle, so even with a strong cast you may walk away thinking you’ve seen better versions of this movie elsewhere. If you’re a completist for Feuillère or mid-century French gangster atmospherics it’s worth a look, but if you want a tight, memorable crime film, this one may test your patience.
