Night of the Demon (1957)

Night of the Demon is what happens when a horror film decides it doesn’t need to shout to get under your skin: Jacques Tourneur builds dread with elegance, letting foggy London streets, rustling woods, and half-glimpsed rituals do the heavy lifting. Dana Andrews makes the perfect anchor as a cool-headed skeptic whose certainty is gradually worn down by clues, manuscripts, and coincidences that feel a little too precise to be random, while Niall MacGinnis gives the villain a disarming, almost playful charm that makes him even more unsettling. The movie’s pleasures are in its intelligence and craftsmanship—each scene clicks into the next like a well-made mystery, but the vibe stays deliciously uncanny, as if the air itself is conspiring against reason. If you want loud shocks or modern gore, this isn’t your ride, but if you crave classic, genuinely eerie supernatural suspense that respects your imagination, it’s a small masterpiece.

Night of the Demon is trying to be a classy, slow-burn clash between cold scientific skepticism and creeping occult dread, and for long stretches it absolutely delivers that moody Jacques Tourneur atmosphere. The problem is the film occasionally insists on showing you the “demon” outright, and the visible creature effects can puncture the tension that the windstorm-and-paranoia build-up works so hard to create. If you want modern, convincing scares or a finale that sticks the landing with subtlety, this may leave you rolling your eyes at the worst possible moment. But if you can meet it on its own terms—enjoying eerie set-pieces, a solid cat-and-mouse dynamic, and that vintage British chill—it’s still a worthwhile piece of old-school supernatural mystery.
