Godzilla Raids Again (1955)

Godzilla Raids Again is where the franchise starts to mutate into the pop-myth we recognize today: leaner, faster, and built around the primal thrill of seeing giants collide. Motoyoshi Oda keeps the human story simple and urgent, using it as a runway for the real attraction—Godzilla facing off against Anguirus in bruising, city-shaking battles that still carry the tactile magic of miniatures, suits, and old-school optical effects. The vibe is brisk and scrappy, less mournful than the 1954 original but full of mid-century charm, with Osaka’s blackouts and burning skylines giving the mayhem a strangely eerie beauty. If you want the deeper allegory and tragedy of the first film, this may feel lighter, but if you’re on the fence about classic kaiju, it’s an essential, hugely watchable step toward the series’ monster-movie heartbeat.

Godzilla Raids Again is clearly trying to turn the original’s grim, nuclear-tinged tragedy into a faster, more “monster-versus-monster” crowd-pleaser, and you do get the novelty of Godzilla squaring off against Anguirus with some solid miniature destruction for its era. The problem is the human side is thinly sketched and often feels like filler between set pieces, so the pacing can drag when you’re waiting for the next rampage. It also lacks the weight and polish of the 1954 film, coming off more like a quick follow-up than a must-see continuation. If you’re here for kaiju history, old-school effects, and the early template of Godzilla as a franchise, it’s worth a look; if you want strong characters, tight storytelling, or the original’s emotional punch, this one will likely frustrate you.
