What begins as a stark desert mystery grows into a lean, procedural thriller, anchored by grounded performances that sell the escalating danger without winking at it. The movie’s vibe is pure atomic-age anxiety: stark landscapes, urgent authority figures, and the creeping realization that something man-made has tipped nature into nightmare. If you’re allergic to vintage effects or slower, methodical pacing, it may not convert you—but if you want suspenseful, smartly staged classic sci-fi horror, this is a cornerstone worth seeing.

Them! is trying to turn Cold War nuclear anxiety into a straight-ahead creature feature, and to its credit it treats the threat with a surprisingly serious, procedural tone. But if you’re coming for nonstop horror or modern “wow” visuals, the giant-ant effects can look stagey and the story leans hard on familiar genre beats that feel quaint rather than thrilling. The pacing also takes its time with investigation and military logistics, so parts play more like a methodical hunt than a rollercoaster. Still, if you can meet it on its own 1950s terms, there’s solid tension in the desert and tunnel sequences and a genuine, grim warning about messing with forces you don’t understand.
