Hobson's Choice (1954)

Hobson’s Choice is that rare comedy with a steel spine and a generous heart: a battle of wills played not for cheap laughs, but for dignity, love, and the right to build a life on your own terms. David Lean gives 1880s Salford a lived-in warmth, letting the humor rise naturally from character—especially Charles Laughton’s magnificent bluster as the tyrannical father, and Brenda de Banzie’s quietly commanding brilliance as the daughter who refuses to be managed. The film’s romance is earthy and earned, its wit sharp without cruelty, and its satisfactions come from watching ordinary people discover their strength. If you prefer modern pace or broad comedy, it may feel old-fashioned, but if you like smart, humane storytelling, this one is a genuine delight.

Hobson’s Choice is aiming for a warm, old-fashioned battle-of-wits comedy where a sharp daughter and a meek bootmaker quietly outmaneuver a loud, selfish patriarch, and on that level it often lands thanks to terrific performances (especially Charles Laughton). But it’s very stage-rooted and sometimes feels like it’s trying a bit too hard to “cinema-ize” a simple story, which can make the tone wobble between broad farce and earnest drama. The pacing is deliberate and the humor is more character-based than laugh-out-loud, so if you want a snappy rom-com or a subtler, more naturalistic Lean film, this may feel overworked. If you’re happy with period dialogue, theatrical setups, and a central figure whose alcoholism is played for both comedy and discomfort, there’s a lot of charm and craft to enjoy.
