Harry Horner keeps the pace brisk and the atmosphere tense, letting the whodunit pleasures build while the emotional temperature rises—especially as suspicion hardens into obsession. Jeanne Crain brings grounded heart to the investigation’s human cost, Jean Peters gives the victim a vivid presence even in absence, and the film’s best trick is how it makes the detective’s intensity feel both compelling and frightening. If you like noirs that trade flashy twists for mounting dread and strong performances, this one’s an easy, satisfying watch; if you prefer mysteries with gentler edges, its hardboiled bite may feel a little chilly.
