Bend of the River (1952)

Bend of the River is trying to be a sturdier-than-average wagon-train Western, mixing frontier grit with a redemption story where loyalty is constantly tested. But the plot can feel more like a series of moral reversals than a truly gripping mystery, so if you’re expecting a deeply involving backstory payoff, you may find it oddly routine. Also, be warned: the film includes a Stepin Fetchit role played for broad laughs that reads as an ugly racial stereotype today, and if that’s a deal-breaker (fair), this won’t be an enjoyable watch no matter how solid the Western craft is around it.
