They Live by Night feels like the moment film noir stopped posing and started bleeding: Nicholas Ray shoots young love on the run with a tenderness and urgency that make the danger feel heartbreakingly intimate. Farley Granger and Cathy O’Donnell bring a bruised innocence to Bowie and Keechie, and the movie surrounds them with tactile, lived-in details—diners, roadways, cheap rooms—that turn every small kindness into something precious. Ray’s camera has real movement and vigor, and the soundtrack threads through it all like a pulse, pushing the romance and dread forward without ever tipping into melodrama.
