The Naked City is clearly aiming for a semi-documentary, street-level police procedural that treats New York itself as the star, and in that sense it’s historically important and often visually absorbing. The catch is the storytelling can feel more dutiful than gripping: the script leans on routine legwork and voiceover framing, so if you’re expecting a twisty mystery or sharp character drama, it may come off as drab and oddly impersonal.
