Explained

What people think about That Hagen Girl

That Hagen Girl is the kind of small-town drama that feels like a magnifying glass held over a community’s conscience, where every glance and whisper can bruise. Shirley Temple, grown into a poised and affecting young actress, gives Mary Hagen a wounded dignity that makes you root for her even when the world insists on defining her by rumor, while Ronald Reagan brings an easy sincerity that keeps the story grounded in human decency rather than melodrama. Director Peter Godfrey keeps the mood simmering with quiet tension—part romantic yearning, part social indictment—so the film plays less like a scandal and more like a study of how cruelty can hide behind “respectability.” It’s not for everyone if you’re allergic to old-Hollywood earnestness and talky scenes, but if you like character-driven classics about reputation, longing, and the cost of judgment, this one has a surprisingly sharp bite.
