Conflict (1945)

Conflict is a deliciously uneasy slice of Warner Bros. noir that lets Humphrey Bogart step out of his usual moral orbit and into something darker, more nervy, and quietly fascinating to watch. Curtis Bernhardt builds the tension with the confidence of a studio-era craftsman: crisp scenes, shadowy atmosphere, and a tightening sense that one bad idea can metastasize into a whole life. The movie’s pleasures are in its cat-and-mouse intrigue and the way Sydney Greenstreet’s urbane psychologist presence adds a sly, intellectual chill to the suspense without ever turning it into a lecture. It’s not the flashiest noir of the decade, and its pacing is more methodical than sensational, but if you like your thrillers smart, moody, and driven by performance, Conflict earns your attention.

Conflict is clearly aiming for a slick, psychological cat-and-mouse thriller where a “perfect” marriage curdles into cold-blooded calculation, and the setup is juicy enough to promise fireworks. The problem is that the psychology is more talked about than convincingly dramatized, and the plotting can feel routine and oddly mechanical, so you may find yourself ahead of the movie instead of gripped by it. Even with Bogart and Greenstreet adding some class and watchability, the tension doesn’t always build to a satisfying payoff, and the pace can come off a bit dull for a film with this premise. If you want a sharp, twisty noir that keeps escalating, this might disappoint; if you’re in the mood for a vintage studio thriller with solid performances and modest stakes, it’s an easy, if not essential, watch.
