Mr. & Mrs. Smith (1941) is a sparkling slice of screwball romance that turns a tiny legal hiccup into a delightfully messy battle of pride, affection, and one-upmanship. Carole Lombard is pure radiance—quick with a look, sharper with a line—and the film lets her chemistry with Robert Montgomery fizz like champagne in a Manhattan penthouse. Mr. & Mrs. Smith is clearly aiming for a breezy screwball romp about marriage, pride, and romantic one-upmanship, and you can see why Hitchcock wanted to try something lighter.
