Fantasia (1940)

Fantasia isn’t just an animated film so much as a daring act of cinema: a full-length concert where classical music and imagery don’t accompany each other, they merge into a single, living experience. Each segment has its own mood and style—sometimes playful, sometimes serene, sometimes thunderously ominous—and the craft is so imaginative and exacting you can feel Disney and his artists reaching beyond what animation was “supposed” to do in 1940.
