Son of Frankenstein (1939)

Son of Frankenstein is where Universal’s classic horror turns operatic: a towering gothic spectacle of shadowed corridors, crackling laboratories, and a sense of doom so richly designed you can practically feel the cold stone walls. Rowland V. Lee directs with a confident, storybook menace, and the film’s real electricity comes from its performances—Basil Rathbone brings stern intelligence and moral unease, Boris Karloff makes the Monster tragically physical, and Bela Lugosi’s Ygor steals scenes with wicked, wounded delight. It’s less a pure shocker than a grand, atmospheric morality play with pulpy momentum and surprisingly sharp character tension. If you want subtle realism, look elsewhere, but if you’re on the fence about old-school horror, this is one of the most lavish, entertaining reasons to climb over.

Son of Frankenstein is clearly trying to keep Universal’s monster magic alive by leaning into bigger sets, grander melodrama, and a revenge-driven twist where the creature becomes someone else’s weapon. The problem is the tone can feel oddly mixed—part Gothic horror, part pulpy mystery—and the story lurches from strong moments to stretches that play a bit silly or repetitive compared with the earlier, sharper Frankenstein films. If you’re coming for a tight, emotionally haunting monster tragedy, this one may frustrate you, but if you’re happy with a lavish old-school studio spectacle, it still delivers atmosphere. The real draw is the cast: Rathbone brings brisk authority, Karloff remains imposing, and Lugosi’s Ygor steals the movie with nasty charm even when the plot wobbles.
