St. Jorgen's Day (1930)

St. Jorgen’s Day is a sly, exuberant comedy that feels startlingly modern in how it skewers the cozy alliance between religion, money, and authority—then tops it off with a deliciously brazen act of public “miracle-making.” Protazanov and Podobed keep the pace brisk and the tone bright but biting, letting the satire land through crisp staging, bustling crowd scenes, and the kind of visual wit that silent-era craftsmanship perfected. Igor Ilyinsky and Anatoli Ktorov make a terrific pair: nimble, expressive, and constantly alive to the absurdity around them, turning deception into a kind of dance without ever asking you to sympathize with the con. If you enjoy classic comedies with sharp teeth and a carnival atmosphere, it’s a treat; if irreverence aimed at church pageantry isn’t your taste, you’ll at least have to admire how confidently and cleverly it pulls it off.

St. Jorgen’s Day is clearly aiming for sharp, anti-clerical satire—skewering religious spectacle, civic corruption, and the way “miracles” get packaged for profit—with a con-man plot to keep things lively. The problem is that, as a 1930 comedy, the pacing and humor can feel stagey and dated if you’re expecting snappy modern laughs, and the tone leans more toward broad farce than truly biting wit. If you don’t enjoy early sound-era rhythms, theatrical acting, or satire that’s more playful than savage, you may find it more historically interesting than genuinely funny. Still, there’s a clever central gimmick, some pointed jabs at hypocrisy, and enough absurdity in the setup to reward viewers who like vintage comedies with a cynical streak.
