Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Daniels served as the cinematographer for the early films of director Erich von Stroheim and on all but three of Greta Garbo's films during her tenure at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Later he worked on myriad notable films such as The Shop Around the Corner (1940), Harvey (1950), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Ocean's 11 (1960), How the West Was Won (1962), and Valley of the Dolls (1967).
